How is the area around CSU dominguez hills in Carson, Ca?

I will be moving there this fall. What is carson like overall and what is the area around Dominguez Hills University like? Is it safe. Does it look jacked up? Is Carson as a whole really ghetto? What are the people like? Are there some nice places close by. Where should I NOT go. I know compton is close by, but are there any other neighborhood things I should know? My main concern is safety, though. If you could compare it to torrance that helps because I am somewhat familiar of that area.
